Festa delle Ortensie
Worthy of note is also Festa delle Ortensie which falls on the third weekend of June. In a few years the festival, organised by the Municipality of Bolsena and the Association “Friends of Hydrangeas”, has become one of the most awaited events by experts, collectors and keen tourists. This year rare and unusual plants are going to be displayed, but the main role on stage will be played by Hydrangeas, coming from China and Japan. During the days of the exposition the flowers are going to bloom fully, showing colours ranging from white to pink and sky blue and thus giving an impressive eye stroke.

Fiera del Vino
During the summer Marta hosts a huge Wine Fair, where the best local products of the area, such as Est!Est!Est, Aleatico di Gradoli and Cannaiola di Marta are displayed and traded. Simultaneously other events are organised. Among these it is worthy of note “In Cantina con Defuk”, a gastronomic and wine-tasting itinerary in the old wine cellars, evening outdoor shows and concerts. Furthermore the folkloristic Historical Parade tells the legend of Est! Est! Est.

Not to be missed the 2016 edition of Permaculture occurring in Bolsena and also at Valdisole

Saint Christina’s Misteries
Don’t miss the celebrations on Saint Christina’s Day, happening on July 23rd of each year. The inhabitants of the village, disguised with Roman clothes, honour the Saint through the Mysteries, plays recalling Christina’s martyrdom through a tens of plastic scenes on temporary stages arranged in the town centre.

Umbria Jazz
During the month of July Perugia becomes the International Capital City of Jazz music. The Medieval- looking corners of the town centre are going to host modern stages where the most famous Italian and foreign Jazz singers and musicians are going to perform their concerts.
In the town centre there are also cheap restaurants where you can eat delicious local food and sip tasty local wines.

Rome
Capital city of Italy, it is 130 kilometres far from Bolsena and can be easily reached either by train (from the train station of Viterbo) or bus. The most populated Municipality in Italy, Roma is definitely the main tourist hub in the country. Rome hosts amazing Archaeological Parks, first of all the Roman Fora (among these there is the Colosseum, the main example of Roman Amphitheatre). Particularly cool to see is also the Baroque heritage in Rome, ranging from churches to Monumental Fountains, luxurious houses and the urban renewals made by Bernini and Borromini.
Worthy of a visit are also the places of power: Palazzo Montecitorio (premises of the Chamber of Deputies), Palazzo Madama (premises of the Senate of the Republic), Palazzo Chigi (premises of the Prime Minister) and Quirinale (premises of the Head of the State).

Florence
190 kilometres far from Bolsena, it is known all over the world for being the Capital City of Italian Renaissance. During that time Florence reached indeed the peak of its splendour through excellent artworks and buildings which make Florence known all over the world, such as Palazzo Vecchio with the aside Loggia dei Lanzi, the Statue of David by Donatello, the Baptistery, the Cathedral, Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Strozzi. Recommendable is also a visit to Uffizi where you can admire a number of artworks by the main Italian and European artists from the Middle Ages to the 18th Century.

Siena
Another fine example of Italian urban centre is Siena. The pounding hearth of the town is definitely Piazza del Campo, the main square where lies the Palazzo Pubblico with the Torre del Mangia. Worthy of note is also the Cathedral, a stunning example of Italian Gothic architecture. The past of Siena is revived twice a year through the Palio, a historical horse tournament happening on July 2nd and August 16th.

Assisi
100 kilometres far away from Bolsena lies Assisi. It is famous for being the birthplace of Saint Francesco and Saint Chiara and it is affected by a tourist flow linked to the worship of the two Saints. An obliged stop-over of the itinerary of the Pilgrims is Basilica of Saint Francesco, divided between the superior and the inferior part. Assisi contains other examples of religious architecture too, such as Saint Rufino’s Cathedral and Saint Maria Maggiore’s. Worthy of a visit is also Piazza del Comune where lies the Temple of Minerva, proof of the Roman past of Assisi, and next to it the Medieval Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and Palazzo dei Priori, now premises of the offices of the Municipality.
At the beginning of May the lovers of folklore should not miss Calendimaggio, a Medieval Festival consisting in a challenge between the two districts of Parte de Sopra and Parte de Sotto, with parades, performing of plays, music, dances and flag throwing.

Perugia
100 kilometres far from Bolsena, Perugia, the main administrative centre of Umbria, conserves several proofs of its past.
In the suburb of Ponte San Giovanni you can visit Hypogeum of Volumni, an example of underground Etruscan burial which is part of a wider archaeological site, Necropoli del Palazzone.
Up on the hill the town centre conserves fine examples of its Medieval past, such as Palazzo dei Priori, now premises of the offices of the Municipality, the Gothic Fontana Maggiore by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano and Saint Lorenzo’s Cathedral.
Not to be missed is Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, hosted inside Palazzo dei Priori. Worthy of a visit is also Rocca Paolina, a unique example of Renaissance military architecture.

Via Francigena
Via Francigena was a pathway connecting Canterbury to Rome, one of the main destinations for Pilgrims during the Middle Ages. The pathway passed through some villages along the Lake and also in the surrounding region of Tuscia. From the Castle of Proceno Via Francigena goes down towards the centre of Acquapendente, a fundamental stop-over for Pilgrims as there were relics brought from the Holy Land and now hosted in the Cathedral. Then Via Francigena passes through the stunning Medieval village and goes to San Lorenzo Nuovo, from which you can admire a breathtaking view on the Lake. Curiously, unlike the neighbouring villages, the urban structure is not Medieval but Neoclassical.
From San Lorenzo Nuovo the itinerary continues through the latches of Volsinii mountains towards Bolsena, another important stop-over for Pilgrims because during a Mass celebrated in Bolsena the Miracle which gave birth to the Festivity of Corpus Domini occurred.
After leaving Bolsena, the Pilgrims followed the ancient Via Cassia until Montefiascone and Viterbo, where the Popes used to stay and where Pilgrims could take a relief in the Baths.

Il Sentiero dei Briganti
The Swindlers’ Path recalls that during the 19th century the region of Tuscia was plagued by swindlers. Specific road signs shows the main examples of the cultural heritage located on the pathway and tell about the swindlers who marked the history of the area with their adventures. It is indeed an opportunity to get an insight and to learn about the most secret and attracting corners of these stories.

First of all the village the Lake is named after: Bolsena
The town centre conserves vestiges of its Etruscan – Roman past, such as the urban walls and the Anfiteatro del Mercatello, and has kept its structure intact throughout the centuries, now looking as it did during the Middle Ages. From Santa Christina’s Church you can have access to the underneath Catacombs, a typical example of early-Christian underground building showing Medieval renovations and conserving fine masterpieces by local Renaissance painters. Inside Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara, you can visit the “Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena”, where you can get an overview of the history of the place from its geological origins to the Etruscan- Roman and Medieval times up to the recent developments of local culture. On the nearby hills woods of oaks, chestnut trees and hornbeams work as the backdrop of Etruscan necropolises. On the coasts of the Lake there are many restaurants where you can have typical dishes and wines.

Viterbo
From the Lake it is easy to reach Viterbo, the main administrative centre of the area. Romans have turned the original Etruscan village in a military settlement, a peculiarity which would be strengthened during the early Middle Ages through the building of massive walls. Considered as impregnable for having defeated Frederick Barbarossa in 1263, Viterbo was chosen as Headquarters of the Pope between 1257 and 1281. Indeed the making of the Palace of the Popes with its Loggia and its Palace of Conclave dates back to that time. Another proof of the glorious Medieval past of Viterbo is its town centre with its narrow streets, its Romanic and Romanic-Gothic churches and San Pellegrino district, whose appearance has almost unchanged since. Not to be missed the Etruscan National Museum inside the Albornoz Castle, where you can see the Chariot from Ischia di Castro, a stunning bronze parade float dating back to the 4th century BC. Particularly impressive is the carrying of Saint Rosa’s Float, which happens on September 3rd, Saint Rosa’s Day.

Civita di Bagnoregio
Not far away from Viterbo lies Civita di Bagnoregio, defined as “The Dying Village” by Bonaventura Tecchi, a writer born in the village. Civita, a suburb of the Municipality of Bagnoregio, lies on the top of a clayish hill affected by a phenomenon of erosion which is responsible for its isolation. From Civita, reachable only on walk by means of a hanging bridge made of concrete, you can admire the impressive underneath valley, made of badlands stemming from an extensive erosion of clayish soils by wind and water.

Tuscania
On a tuff hill dominating the strategic valley created by the rivers Capecchio and Marta, an emissary of Bolsena Lake, lies the village of Tuscania. Important town of the Etruscan realm of Tarquinia, Tuscania conserved its importance after it was taken over by Romans, who built Via Clodia. Archeologists discovered several Etruscan necropolises, particularly interesting from the viewpoint of the variety of hosted tombs. The items found in the tombs are enshrined in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Tuscanese. The interesting archaeological site of Tuscania lies in a stunning farming area stretching for over 2000 hectares rich in olive trees, which in 1997 was recognized as “Natural Reserve of Tuscania”.
The full immersion in the nature is also guaranteed by a walk on the ancient stretches of Via Clodia going through Tuscania and connecting it to the villages in the surroundings.

Saturnia
The path of Via Clodia leads us from Tarquinia to Saturnia, a suburb of the Municipality of Manciano (Gr), known for its spas. In the area there are indeed thermal springs whose sulfurous waters pour at a temperature of 37.5° C and have well-known therapeutic properties, giving immediate rest and wellness to the bathers. The main thermal waterfalls are Mulino Waterfalls, located on an ancient mill, and Gorello Waterfalls.

Orvieto
In the Umbria region lies Orvieto. Lying on a huge tuff cliff dominating the underneath valley, it conserves paramount examples of civil and religious architecture dating back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, such as the stunning Gothic Cathedral built by Lorenzo Maitani, an architect belonging to the School of Siena, San Brizio’s Chapel with a famous cycle of frescoes about the Last Judgement by Luca Signorelli (1499 – 1502), the Palace of the Captain of the Citizens, the Palace of the Popes, this hosting the Archeological National Museum, and elegant ancient houses.
Absolutely not to be missed is the impressive Saint Patrick’s Well, an amazing Late Renaissance masterpiece of hydraulic engineering.
On any fourth Sunday of the Month the streets of the town centre are the setting of Crafts’ Fair, where you can see and purchase hand-made items, pottery, glass, textiles, wooden items, paintings, natural products.

Pitigliano
Pitigliano lies on a tuff cliff along the Strada Regionale 47 Maremmana.
Known since the Middle Ages for the presence of a large community of Jews, so that it was called “The Small Jerusalem”, it conserves a Synagogue dating back to the 16th Century and the Jewish Cemetery as proofs of its religious variety.
In the neighbourhood of Pitigliano there is a number of Etruscan necropolises. Near the necropolis of Gradone, close to the Jewish Cemetery, a new learning centre was created. Such a centre is divided in two sections: the “Town of Alive People” and the “Town of Dead people”. The “Town of Alive People” contains reconstructions of houses and rooms dating back to the Bronze Age and the Etruscan Age. Through Vie Cave, a system of streets built by the Etruscans, you can get down to the section “Town of Dead people”, where you can visit the burying area with one-, two- or three- room tombs. Here you can visit the “demo” tomb, where the burial of Larth and Velia, a fictitious couple of dead spouses, has been arranged, allowing you to experience the sacredness and the feelings of an Etruscan funeral. A further going down leads you into Saint John’s Necropolis, conserving tombs dating back to from 6th century to the early 3rd century BC.
Inside the Monumental Tomb with a couple of pillars aside you can see panels with the images of the theatre plays performed during the summer.

Sovana
Still in the province of Grosseto there is Sovana, a suburb of Sorano, a rare jewel of Medieval urban centre.
Founded by the Etruscans and conquered by the Romans, during the Middle Ages it was a feud run by the family of Aldobrandeschi and then became a free Municipality. During the Middle Ages the plagues reduced the population of the town so much that it was called “Jeremiah’s town”, the Dying Town. The attempts by Lorenas to repopulate the town, which took place since the 16th century, turned out to be useless, which helped to maintain intact the Medieval appearance of Sovana up to nowadays.
Worthy of note is the Archaeological Site of Sovana on the road heading to San Martino sul Fiora.
Linked to the Archaeological Site of Pitigliano by the already mentioned Vie Cave and being part of the area “Archaeological Park of the Tuff”, the site hosts a number of Monumental Tombs dating back to the Etruscan Age.
Particularly worthy of a visit is Tomba Ildebranda.

Cannara Garden
Located on the shores of Marta, an emissary of Bolsena Lake, this stunning Garden is named after a building dating back to the Romans and lying above the creek, a sort of bridge-house containing a grid system (originally made of canes, after which Cannara is named) allowing the capture of eels. The Garden is home to a large variety of flowers, such as roses, peonies, irises, violets, poppies, callas and a huge lotus.

 

 

Palazzo Farnese
From Bolsena you can easily reach Caprarola where lies the amazing Palazzo Farnese, which dates back to the 16th century. Originally conceived as a military fortress by Antonio da Sangallo, it was restored and turned into the elegant summer house of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese by Architect Vignola. It is him who built the two front staircases, thus breaking the isolation of the ancient fortress from the town centre of Caprarola. Inside the building the original austerity was replaced by the luxury of the frescoes of the several rooms of the building, made by talented artists of that time, such as Zuccari Brothers, Jacopo Zanguidi better known as “Bertoja”, Raffaellino da Reggio, Antonio Tempesta and other minor artists. On the rear of the building you can visit the Italian Gardens, precisely designed according to the 16th century style. On the top of the Gardens there is the hidden House of Pleasure, built right after the construction of Palazzo Farnese and once summer house of the former President of the Republic Luigi Einaudi.

Villa Lante della Rovere
Heading back towards Viterbo, you can take a visit to Villa Lante della Rovere, another example of late 16th century Mannerist architecture arguably built by Vignola. The visitor who has already visited Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola is going to be struck by the difference between the two Houses: Villa Lante indeed is not a majestic fortress turned into summer house, but is composed of two detached Houses, built by two cardinals after whom the two Houses are named. Having been built by two different people, the two Houses show different styles of frescoes: the landscapes in Casino Gambara contrast with the Classical stylish frescoes of Casino Montalto. The main attraction of Villa Lante della Rovere are the Gardens, consisting in a wide green area composed of monumental fountains, artificial creeks, tailored bushes, statues of Water Gods, oaks, holm oaks and plane trees.

The Park of the Monsters in Bomarzo
At Bomarzo not far from Villa Lante lies the Park of the Monsters or Holy Wood, a grotesque Monumental Garden. The Park was built in 1547 by Architect Pirro Ligorio on the will of Vicino Orsini and is a peculiar example of Late Renaissance Garden, different from the already mentioned Italian Gardens of Palazzo Farnese and the Mannerist Gardens of Villa Lante della Rovere. The Park is indeed made of sculptures portraying mythological characters and extravagant architectures, such as the Leaning House and the Orcus. It is hard to identify a single interpretation able to work as a Leitmotiv linking all the artworks of the Park: after several attempts carried out by scholars and philologists to find out a paradigm of interpretation, it is likely that Vicino Orsini had on purpose inserted in the artworks of the Park a large variety of erudite quotes, ranging from Medieval and Renaissance Literature to mythology, astronomy and esoterism, along the lines of the multiplicity of styles typical of Mannerist Architecture.

La Scarzuola
At Montegiove, a village in the Municipality of Montegabbione (TR) lies the Ideal Town by Tommaso Buzzi. The Monumental Park was built between 1958 and 1978 and was conceived as a backcloth, intentionally left unfinished. The buildings recall several previous buildings, known for being really spectacular: Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este in Tivoli, Rometta by Pirro Ligorio, Acropolis in Athens and the already described Park of the Monsters in Bomarzo. The style of the complex is definitely the Neo-Mannerism, amplified by the staircases connecting the parts of the complex, the stretching of the monuments, the intentional disproportion of the parts, the maze-like structure, the geometrical shapes, the astronomical quotes and the implementation of unaccomplished architectural plans by Borromini and other Mannerist and Baroque Architects.

The Tarot Garden
Another Monumental Park in the neighbourhood of Bolsena Lake is the Tarot Garden. Located in Pescia Fiorentina in the Municipality of Capalbio (GR), it was created by Niki de Saint-Phalle, a French-Us artist, in 1979 and is composed of 22 statues recalling the main Tarot Cards. The statues of the Tarots go along with the visitor on an itinerary conceived by Niki as a spiritual and magical trip, a sort of initiation recalling previous masterpieces (the Park of the Monsters in Bomarzo, the Ideal Palace by Ferdinand Cheval, the Park Guell in Barcellona, the Watt Towers by Simon Rodia in Los Angeles).

Giardino di Spoerri
Another Monumental Park easily reachable from the Lake is Giardino di Spoerri in the Municipality of Seggiano (Gr). It can be visited from Easter to October and contains 103 masterpieces by 50 different artists: the path develops among fields and small woods in the 16 hectare wide Park, following an only apparently random rhythm. The Modern artworks are arranged in a totally random way so as to disguise with the landscape. In addition to the sculptures there is also a botanic path. Furthermore, for any artist exposing in the Park there is an olive tree typically growing in this area and known as “olivastra seggianese”.

Castello Ruspoli
At Vignanello, in the neighbourhood of Bomarzo, lies Castello Ruspoli, a refined example of Renaissance castle. It owes its appearance to the renewal of the preexisting Medieval Castle between 1531 and 1548 upon the will of Beatrice Farnese and her son-in-law Sforza Marescotti, presumably on a project by Antonio da Sangallo. Its huge bulk, surrounded by a deep trench, tightened by four corner bastions and featuring Ghibelline battlements, dominates the landscape of the village. At the beginning of the 17th century Giulia Orsini, daughter to Vicino Orsini, took the decision to build the Gardens stretching on the hill east of the Castle, creating an articulated structure with different sections. Among these the Garden of Vegetables is definitely the most interesting and best preserved part of the entire complex. Bushes of Laurel, Prunus Laurocerasus, Viburnum, Viburnum Tinus and Buxus sempervirens grow on its perimeter, while short hedges of Buxus Sempervirens draw geometrical shapes within.
